Preston / Los Angeles brings together two films which explore very different west coast cities, not via the major landmarks but the small details—an idea of ‘heritage’ which has equal time for the old and new, the prominent and the forgotten alike.
As part of the 1975 BBC TV series Nairn’s Journeys the unorthodox and passionate architecture critic Ian Nairn visited towns and cities across Britain. Visiting Preston in Football Towns - Bolton & Preston, he is immediately enthusiastic about the city, and finds it to be ‘doing a good job of being itself’.
Shot across Los Angeles, artist Thom Andersen’s ‘city symphony’ Get Out of the Car, shown here on original 16mm film, is a love letter to the forgotten and overlooked spaces of the City of Dreams—via billboards and building façades, fragments of music and the sites of vanished landmarks.
