Life of Buildings

Website and Virtual Reality Experience - Launch Event

Manchester Reform Synagogue, Jacksons Row, M2 5NH
For several months researchers, led by Manchester School of Architecture, have been working with Jacksons Row Synagogue and Archives+ to make a digital record of the building, to collect memories, images and films and to combine them into a virtual reality experience. Join them to hear about the project, experience the VR using a headset, and for an extremely rare glimpse inside Manchester’s first post-war building and only city centre synagogue

Visitors will be able to navigate the building in real and virtual ways. The team will be on hand to help guests using VR headsets encounter the history of the building as well as its digital record. Then visitors will be free to encounter one of Manchester's best kept secrets - the fine interior of this building from 1953. The synagogue was designed by Peter Cummings and Eric Levy, both members of the Reform congregation. Cummings was also involved in the design of Appleby Lodge (1939) in Rusholme and was the architect for the Cornerhouse Cinema (1935) and Apollo Theatre (1938) in Ardwick Green.
