Municipal Dreams - Liverpool Social Housing

Talk

Municipal Dreams on Liverpool Social Housing

Liverpool, home of the first council housing in Britain. In 1869 St Martins cottages became the first municipal housing in the UK, Municipal Dreams will take us on a journey through the formative developments of the cities social housing from Victorian slum clearance to the 1930's proto-modern apartment blocks inspired by Karl Marx Hof in Vienna. Innovation and a search for new forms and construction techniques would be driven by an almost continuous housing shortage which, post 1945, reached crisis proportions.

Liverpool's response, as elsewhere in the country, was slum clearance and new town displacement, in a postscript to Municipal Dreams talk we will discuss the city's Modernist legacy and the role of the City Architects department under Dr Ronald Bradbury, City Architect and Director of Housing from 1949 to 1970.
